Living with Heart Plastic

Living with Heart Plastic

Oklahama, Troy Golden Living dead could be in the backpack luggage. Wherever he goes there is always a dipunggungnya backpack. This backpack contains a pneumatic pump to help pump his heart.

Troy heart made of plastic material weighing 160 grams, or slightly larger than the biological heart. Artificial heart is powered by a pneumatic pump that can be taken anywhere in a backpack.

Troy should always carry a rucksack containing a pneumatic pump which is connected with a long hose to the heart makes.

The length of waiting for donor heart, make a doctor must think fast to save the troubled heart of Troy. The man from the U.S. Oklahama born with heart defects called Marfan syndrome.

Marfan syndrome or Marfan's syndrome is a genetic condition since birth that slowly attacks the body's tissues, including heart and heart valves.

Finally at the age of 41 years, Troy had to undergo rescue operation by replacing the valve and form the back wall of his heart. But his condition worsened. At the end of January 2010, he entered the heart transplant list, but time passed without any donor.

"Heart of Troy was so bad that the heart pumps have traditionally been not enough. So, we decided to try something different to completely replace the heart," said Troy's cardiologist, Dr. Doug Horstmanshof, reported by BBC News, Wednesday (16/2/2011 .)

In September last year, Troy became one of the few people in the United States are replacing the entire heart with a device called a Total Artificial Heart (total artificial heart).

"It was certainly quite impressive. Fun to look into his chest and knowing that the only thing that makes it live is just a synthetic gas to replace his heart," said Dr. James Long, a surgeon who handles Troy.

Troy has been used to the sound of non-stop from the pneumatic pump. "This is incredible, can exit the hospital and returned home to a normal life," said Troy.

Total Artificial Heart has given hope to the lives of Troy. But this is not a permanent solution, because this artificial heart using a battery that must be constantly replenished. Risk of infection and clotting is also a concern.

For now Troy's long wait for donor heart. New road from this research focuses on efforts to assist, not replace heart.
